Fluctuating asymmetry and general intelligence: No genetic or phenotypic association

چکیده
Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is the non-pathological left–right asymmetry of body traits that are usually left–right symmetrical, such as eye breadths and elbow to wrist lengths in humans, but which can be affected by developmental stressors. It is generally considered throughout biology to be an indicator of developmental instability and thus of lack of overall biological fitness. Several investigators have proposed that deficiencies in general intelligence (g) may be indicators of the same kind of instability in human brain development. If so, FA and g should be negatively correlated. Moreover, because g shows substantial genetic influences, FA should also show genetic influences, and the two sets of genetic influences should be correlated. We investigated these propositions in a sample of 263 adults that included 88 pairs of twins. Results indicated genetic influences on FA, but FA and gwere not correlated at either the observed or genetic

Female preference for symmetrical vertical bars in male sailfin mollies.
Fluctuating asymmetry is defined as random deviation from perfect bilateral symmetry in otherwise symmetrical morphological traits and originates from developmental errors during ontogeny. It is thought to reflect the inability of a genotype to buffer itself effectively against environmental perturbations, thus providing an honest phenotypic indicator of genetic quality. It has been proposed th...
متن کاملHuman intelligence, fluctuating asymmetry and the peacock¬タルs tail: General intelligence (g) as an honest signal of fitness
Assuming that general intelligence (g) is an honest signal of fitness, we expected g to be related to developmental quality as indexed by Fluctuating Asymmetry (i.e. non-pathological variation in the size of right and left body features). In a population sample of 44 men and 37 women, we assessed the relationship between Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) and g, and, as a control, to the Big Five perso...
متن کاملPatterns of Fluctuating Asymmetry and Shape Variation in Chironomus riparius (Diptera, Chironomidae) Exposed to Nonylphenol or Lead
Deformities and fluctuating asymmetry in chironomid larvae have been proposed as sensitive indicators of biological stress and are commonly used to assess the ecological impact of human activities. In particular, they have been associated in Chironomus riparius, the most commonly used species, with heavy metal and pesticide river pollution. In this study, the effect of lead and 4-nonylphenol on...
متن کاملHsp90 and the quantitative variation of wing shape in Drosophila melanogaster.
The molecular chaperone protein Hsp90 has been widely discussed as a candidate gene for developmental buffering. We used the methods of geometric morphometrics to analyze its effects on the variation among individuals and fluctuating asymmetry of wing shape in Drosophila melanogaster. Three different experimental approaches were used to reduce Hsp90 activity. In the first experiment, developing...
متن کاملAssessing fluctuating asymmetry of white-tailed deer antlers in a three-dimensional context
Fluctuating asymmetry, random departure from perfect symmetry in bilateral traits, has been proposed as an indirect indicator of individual quality. Sexually selected traits, such as deer antlers, are hypothesized to demonstrate decreasing level of fluctuating asymmetry with increasing trait size and decreasing level of fluctuating asymmetry with increasing age. These hypotheses have been previ...
